CHAINSAW CHAINS
WHY THEY CUT LIKE NEW WHEN SHARPENED BY
SCOTT'S SHARPENING SERVICE
Chainsaw chains are first cleaned, then sharpened to the industry-specific tolerances. Scott's Sharpening Service utilizes Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) wheels designed exclusively for chainsaw chains. Unlike a stone wheel, which most chain sharpeners use, the CBN wheel never loses shape. CBN wheels also have incredible Thermal Conductivity which means 60% of heat generated goes to the CBN grit and only 40% goes into the chain cutter. On an Aluminum Oxide (stone) grinding wheel only 10% of the heat generated goes to the grit and 90% goes to the chain cutter. Burnt cutters change the properties of the metal and the cutters will not stay sharp long, if at all. When using CBN wheels, your chain receives a consistent grind throughout the sharpening process, which maintains precise angles, defined cutter length, and smooth operation, but eliminates burs, burnt cutters, and crooked cutting.
Our state-of-the art chain grinders rotate the grinding wheel clockwise for the left hand cutters and counter-clockwise for the right hand cutters. This facet also eliminates uneven cutter length, burs, and burnt cutters. Finally, a dedicated depth gauge grinder verifies every chain a proper and consistent depth gauge height which gives proper chip size and smooth cutting.
Our sharpening equipment incorporates operator inspection in every step and assures the chain has an optimal grind.

Material Removal
In order to sharpen your chainsaw chain properly so it will cut like when you bought it new, we have to remove the damaged portion of the cutters. If the damaged portion is not removed, your chain will not cut properly and efficiently.
Damage occurs when the chain hits something hard like nails, concrete, stones, ground, or sand.
Please see the picture below of a damaged chain cutter. The red box shows the damaged area and the green lines show the portion of the cutter that needs to be removed to properly sharpen the chain. You may notice your chain cutters are shorter than when you brought it to us. When the cutters are damaged it is essential that ALL the cutters are the same length. At Scott's Lawn & Garden Tool Sharpening Service we have no reason to remove more cutter material than necessary. Removing more cutter material has no advantage for us. It takes more time, uses more of our grinding wheel, we do not sell chains, and are not affiliated with any chain company.
Our goal is that your sharpened chain will cut efficiently and safely!

Depth Gauges - Rakers
Proper depth gauge checks and adjustments during the sharpening process are as important as having two-cycle oil in your fuel mix.
Depth gauges, or "Rakers" as they are sometimes called, control the amount of wood severed by a cutter tooth. During the life of a chainsaw chain, they need maintenance for top cutting performance.
When your chain is new its depth gauges are set correctly, but after a chain is sharpened they may need maintenance. Each time the chain is sharpened the top corner of the cutter tooth gets lower. If the depth gauges are not measured and maintained each time the chain is sharpened, the tooth cuts thinner and thinner chips. Eventually, it won't cut anything at all or produces only saw dust.
At Scott's Sharpening Service the depth gauges are checked and adjusted as needed every time your chain is sharpened. I find 90% of chains I sharpen need the depth gauges maintained. I also find the depth gauges have never been touched on most chains that have been sharpened by others.
